Electricity/Energy

1) reduce the number of fridges & kettles & toasters to reduce energy consumption £££; 2) switch off computers, monitors, lights and appliances £££; 3) smart lighting or last out switch off £££; 4) better heating systems £££; 5) low energy bulbs or strip lights £££; 6) don’t use lights on bright days £££; 7) measure energy savings with electrical monitors; 8) individually controlled power supplies; 9) thermal blinds; 10) better air ventilating/circulating system; 11) green electricity supplier; 12) solar panels: electricity/hot water; 13) electric/hydro electric vehicles; 14) combined heat and power; and 15) heat pumps-energy from waste.

Recycling & Reusing

1) cardboard is currently not recycled; 2) plastic bottles, cardboard and cans are not lifted at triangle; 3) batteries, laser toner, internal mail, mobile phones, chargers, book swap, office free-cycle; 3) don’t put things in plastic bags to re-cycle e.g. boxes in bags rather than tied; 4) council doesn’t recycle office cardboard, but it does for public (barrier: confidentiality); 5) centralized distribution of recycled paper; 6) start recycling paper & plastic cups & hand towels; 7) recycle everything that can be recycled (cans, paper, plastic bottles, glass jars etcetera) and work to resolve collection problems; 8) reuse carrier bags; 9) cleansing staff levels – vehicles etcetera; 10) collection service available at all sites; 11) full (paper, cardboard, cans, glass, plastic) collection service and clear instructions and suitable sized containers; 12) glasses/bottles to reuse for water; 13) look into use of alternative to plastic bags for art galleries/museums etcetera (heavy duty paper?); 14) reuse envelopes; and 15) reusable bags in stock.

Fun/Staff Involvement

1) suggestion box; 2) bring more plants into the office setting; 3) air, brighten up office environment, grow tomatoes or other vegetable plants; 4) waste competition – to reduce waste £££; 5) home baking – fair-trade day; 6) get management on board; 7) small budget set-up (could be from savings like saving on things like reduced printing of Edit magazines); 8) rewards for good practice; 9) provide goodies with information at induction; 10) green days (as rewards for staff or just to get staff involved) e.g. help out with green space projects, e.g. help out with other environmental projects; 11) information; 12) design or paint your own mug or plate; 13) office competitions/green savings/recycling; 14) inter-office competitions (e.g. for number of people who bike or take public transport from each office or amount of paper used per person etcetera); and 15) create toolkits for Green Office Champions.

Printing & Paper

1) use one-sided paper for draft paper, printing notebooks or for printing drafts (where possible as paper jamming may be an issue); 2) copy and print double sided (or on both sides) and multiple sheets per page if possible £££; 3) use mail more efficiently (e.g. don’t use A4 envelope for A4 letter -> fold it!!!) £££; 4) use internal mail more; 5) reduce printing emails £££; 6) reduce distribution of flyers £££; 7) create blank name banners that can be reused; 8) cut down on no. of copies of EDIT - one per section or department; 9) use recycled envelopes between offices £££; 10) mail delivery – most items do not need envelopes £££; 11) set out boxes (or allocate printer drawers) to collect one sided non-confidential paper £££; 12) put as much onto discs as possible and recycle paper that is used; 13) ensure printers/copiers have facility to print/copy double sided; 14) should be able to shop and for best deals rather than stick to one supplier; 15) be sure to send print room scrap paper for note pads; 16) unnecessary faxing e.g. A&R SWD; and 17) re-use paper with one blank side in fax machines £££.

Transport & Travel

1) car share / fleet of pool cars – car allowance scheme start up costs; 2) make map where people live to try to co-ordinate travelling; 3) incentives for car sharing to and from work and between work locations; 4) walk/cycle when possible; 5) use bus tokens; 6) office bike; 7) make car more efficient; 8) tire pressure check; 9) bike, shed (safety, security, insurance, competence); 10) parking of EDC vehicles at depot £££; and 11) promote fuel efficient cars like smart cars.

Food & Drink

1) compost bin; 2) compost teabags; 3) get everybody a mug and a glass £££; 4) for meetings use cups & mugs rather than paper cups £££; 5) use fair-trade products (coffee, tea and others); 6) hospitality – milk sugar, tea-coffee portions £££; 7) water at work - test drinking water and refill plastic bottles £££; 8) bistro food on plate; 9) reduce tetrapaks; 10) green coffee machine; and 11) water coolers are still being used at TJ House and fridges have been brought in to cool bottled water (wasteful duplication) £££.
